During that time, he has acted as magazine editor, illustrator, commentator and writer. He is the author of over 20 books related to fashion and style, including Phaidon's Fashion Today. He is the former Senior Fashion Writer for The Sunday Times Style. He is also the founder and chairman of Fashion Fringe. McDowell is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and a Senior Fellow of the Royal College.
